The disquieting possibility that crime, especially violent crime, and that the break with the constraints of society that it entails might be liberating, even exhilarating, is the notion that drives Michael Pye’s thriller Taking Lives. Using two contrasting characters, one frustrated in his conventional life of career and family, the other who has side-stepped society by reconstructing the lives of the people he has killed, Pye examines the attractions and restrictions of existing both within and outside the social framework. While the book has its tense moments, if it’s heart-stopping suspense or fast paced action you’re after. This is probably not the book for you. But if your bag is the less visceral, more contemplative side of crime writing, this is a compellingly written, thought provoking book, well worth reading.
