Murakami's latest paperback is baffling, darkly comics, horrifying and very, very odd. From the opening pages the plot is compelling but never straightforward. Characters appear, disappear and reappear, each one an unknown quantity, and Murakami's style creates a dreamlike atmosphere which steadily seeps through the cracks in reality to overwhelm both the main character and the reader. A fabulous book. Read it.
